Superflat Kicks

My crazy/genius friend Donny Miller is releasing a new line of Vans this month. They're slip-ons screenprinted with laces. Super cool. I'm getting them in blue.

Check out the commercial he created. It's his own brilliant concept.
And you know Van's "Off the Wall" slogan? He pulled a wicked April Fools joke on the company.

A Little History, A Little Halloween

This installation is from 2002, Olaf Breuning's Skeletons in the Garden of Villa Medici.

Halloween is one of my favorite holidays & puts me in the mood for the rest of the season. I'm already fighting the urge to play Christmas CDs.

Napoleon Bonaparte once lived at Villa Medici, which would eventually become a haven for artists. Speaking of Napoleon, he made an appearance at my prom party not too long ago.

Here he (Donny Miller) is posing with his wife and Napoleon Bonaparrot.
More snapshots soon~

Cupcakes For Chrysler

There was a bake sale at the LA Auto Show to raise money for the Big Three American automakers - GM, Chrysler and Ford. What a fantastic idea! Shouldn't every taxpayer get a cupcake? :)

Before the bake sale ended abruptly, $4 dollars was raised. $2 for Ford, $1 for GM and $1 dollar was donated. The donated dollar was divided evenly between the 3 companies and sent by mail directly to the CEOs.

There Will Be Blood

My friend, the outrageously talented and hilarious Donny Miller pulled a slick one on big oil.

He put up posters at various gas stations around El Lay.

My favorite: We're eco friendly! Just kidding, we're an OIL company.

If you've thought of becoming an artist, he gives away all of his secrets HERE.
Don't miss tip #14... and the rest.

Donny Miller Madness

Watch the joke artist Donny Miller pulls on Rodeo Drive.

A store is up for lease next to Dior and he puts up a 99 Cents Sale sign. Hiliarity ensues. Donny, that's why we love you so!

He happens to be debuting a video taken over 24 hours. I can only imagine. Crazy, but that's how he rolls! Here it is... scheduled to start Wednesday morning:

In the meantime, let's look at some of his fabulous art....

Hello 2008

Simba begrudgingly welcomed in the new year with me. I get it. It was hard saying goodbye to 2007.

I'm ushering in the new year by hanging my new Beautiful People with Beautiful Feelings calendar by Donny Miller. See previous obsessive post about him here.
Here's a page:

The cover is below: The original says, "Beauty is a prison sentence"

Here's another gem: "I got him to change, but now I miss the old him." Want one too? It's at www.donnymiller.com for $12.95.

I like the feeling of a fresh start in the new year, even if I'm operating on a wee bit of sleep today & feeling sniffly. (Please don't let me be sick!)

Maybe it's the Dayquil talking, but I'm going to post my resolutions to see how long before I break them or if it's really possible to achieve them.

1. Take a relaxing trip with Robert. We're working a lot this holiday season. We want to go somewhere & veg.

2. Do more yoga. It feels a bit like going to church, getting a massage & therapy session all in one.

3. Be kind, be kind, be kind. It's always better to be kind & have patience.

4. Have our neighbors over for coffee. We run into each other & we're always friendly, but we've never had them over.

5. Get our upstairs ready to renovate. That will involve lots of cleaning. Cleaning isn't fun.

6. Discover more! That's easy. I love to google.

7. Write a short story or begin writing a book.

Beautiful People with Beautiful Feelings

I love Donny Miller. He's the best. He sometimes looks like a latino Dali with his twisted little mustache, but here he looks pretty cool. This is from his myspace.

To me, he's like the Jonathan Adler of art. Inspirational & cheeky, he doesn't seem to take himself or the world too seriously... at least in my humble opinion.

He creates social commentary without shoving it down your throat... we have enough curmudgeons in the world, don't we? doesn't a spoonful of sugar help the medicine go down? it sure does here in LA

I have his book Beautiful People with Beautiful Feelings. it's the perfect coffee table book that makes me laugh & think a bit. . i also bought a little horse painting he made with an a-bomb blowing up in the background. Isn't that ridiculous? don't i look like a hypocrite now after acting so high & mighty about my perfume? yes i do.
